Nia King is the powerhouse behind Art Activist Nia; art and media by, for and about queer trans people of color. Nia King is a writer and filmmaker whose writing and comics have been published in Colorlines, Interrupt Mag and Make/shift. Her film, The Craigslist Chronicles, has screened at the National Queer Arts Festival, Queer Women of Color Film Festival, York University, University of Toronto, and NYU.As her website puts it; “Nia left a full-time job in an effort to center her life around making art. Grappling with questions of purpose, survival, and compromise, she started a podcast called We Want the Airwaves in order to pick the brains of fellow queer and trans artists of color about their work, their lives, and “making it” – both in terms of success and in terms of survival.” Her new book; Queer and Trans Artists of Color, interviews many artists whom are bay area locals around these issues. Nia will be selling this book as well as several of her zines at Magic Makers.
Nia is excited to connect and gain support from the queer community. “I would like to do a second volume of the book, but that takes time, energy and money that I don’t have right now. If the first book does really well, a second book might seem more feasible down the line.”
This Sunday you can come down and support the work of Nia King at Magic Makers- We are so excited to have her. In the meantime, please check out her website as well as listen to her free podcast which has recently featured amazing interviews with Hari Kondabolu, Mimi Thi Nguyen of the Race Riot Zines, and Totally Radical Muslims- another Magic Makers’s vendor!
